The US. Department of Education allocated the majority of ESEA (Elementary and Secondary Education Act) to Title 1 initiatives, the purpose of which is "to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach at a minimum, proficiency on challenging state academic achievement standards and state academic assessments." The Title 1 grant targets money to schools with high numbers of students on free and reduced lunch. At Sunset School, we use this money to help K-5 students reach grade level proficiency in reading and math. Students who are below grade level in reading and math receive this additional help and may move in and out of Title 1 groups based on their ongoing performance in the following areas:

  • Scores from district assessments

  • Scores on state and standardized tests

  • Teacher recommendation

The Compact for Achievement is an agreement that parents, students, and teachers develop together. It explains how parents and teachers will work together to make sure all our students reach grade-level standards.
